‘Anu’: The Pooja Gandhi show!
January 12th, 2009
The Pooja Gandhi-starrer 'Anu' is a remake of the Telugu hit, 'Anasuya', starring Bhoomika Chawla. Though remakes usually fare much worse than the originals, 'Anu', directed by Shivaganapathy is an exception to the rule.
Anu (Pooja Gandhi) is a gutsy investigative journalist working for a TV channel. She comes face to face with a psychopath killer who kills her uncle as well. But the killer feigns to be an invalid when Anu identifies him. So, even after getting apprehended, he is allowed to go scot free. Anu strongly suspects that his show of physical disability is just put on and she follows him closely. What follows forms the crux of the plot.
As a movie, ‘Anu’ is well-conceived and well-constructed. The screenplay is engaging. But the movie is as repulsive and murky as it can get, particularly in the second half. There are a lot of gory scenes that make a chill run down your spine. The director could have pruned the violence a bit so as to make it non-repulsive.
Pooja Gandhi has outdone Bhumika (who had done the key role in the original) and the film belongs to her. Producer Baalu, who has acted as the psychotic killer, is convincing. Nagkiran, the hero, fails utterly as an actor. Rashmi in a cameo is good. The rest of the ensemble cast include Dattanna, Suguna, Nischita Gowda, Ramesh Bhatt, and Achyuth Kumar.
Cameraman Niranjan Babu has done a great job. Background music by Shekhar Chandra is another plus point of the film.
